Top 10 School Holidays Activities

School holidays are the perfect opportunity for some family time in the Hunter Valley, with a variety of activities to keep the whole family entertained. Spring time is just gorgeous in the Hunter Valley. The vines are coming to life with luscious, new green growth, the days are getting longer and the weather is close to perfect.

Hunter Valley Zoo

Open every day of the school holidays, the Hunter Valley Zoo is home to a wide range of animals: birds, meerkats, kangaroos, alligators, lions, and almost everything in between. The zoo offers daily shows and animal encounters – you can even feed some of the resident kangaroos!

If your little ones like to get their hands dirty and are curious about gardening, this pop up program at Margan is an educational yet fun holiday activity. They’ll learn how to grow their own vegetables, feed the chickens and how to compost at home while touring Margan’s one-acre kitchen garden. There’s also a wine and charcuterie option to occupy the adults while the kids are gardening – a fun time for everyone.

Stretching all the way from the New England Highway to Broke Road, you can choose to cycle for as little or as long as you like, and there’s no shortage of bike hire in the area.

A sweet treat for good little girls & boys

Nothing says school holidays like a cool treat, and we’re lucky enough to have our own gelato company in the Hunter, in 2 locations on Broke Road. Part of the Smelly Cheese Shop, their handmade gelato and sorbet is delicious, and a favourite with locals and visitors.  The Ferrero Rocher gelato is a must try for Nutella lovers, and the lemon sorbet is delightfully refreshing on a hot day. You can even buy 1 litre tubs and take a few scoops of heaven home with you.
